Assistive Technology Assistive Technology is best described as any device, technology, or aid that assists a person with any type of disability to be more independent and able to perform a task. AT helps people with disabilities perform the daily activities most other people take for granted. Getting out of bed and going to work or school may only be possible for some people through the use of AT. Once at work or school, using a computer, reading, or communicating with peers are tasks that may also require the use of assistive technology. This technology plays a vital role in ensuring that people with disabilities achieve their best and participate fully in the community. Amplified Telephones @SLIC is the only agency in the five (5) parish area that has a contract with LA Commission for the Deaf to distribute amplified telephone equipment for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. This service is offered at no cost to any individual with a hearing loss. All you need is the following information: Current drivers license Social security card Audiogram or note from doctor verifying hearing loss Call us today at 337-477-7194! Hearing Aids @SLIC also has a grant through LA Commission for the Deaf to distribute hearing aids at no cost to hearing impaired persons. The State serves a limited number of persons every year. To be placed on the State Waiting List for hearing aids, call Louisiana Commission of the Deaf at1-800-256-1523. This program is based on income and hearing loss. Individual must have 40 decibels or greater hearing loss in both ears. To be placed on the waiting list for subsidized hearing aids in Louisiana, please call 1-800-256-1523.
